<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2025 - Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher</image:title>
<image:caption>I had been saving Nettle and Bone for when I needed a truly good read, and it did not disappoint. T. Kingfisher is always a favourite author of mine (with The Saint of Steel series featuring on last year’s favourite books list). This novel follows Marra, a reluctant princess, connecting with an unlikely band of characters (including a gravewitch, a fairy godmother, an ex-knight, a bone dog, and a demon-possessed chicken) on a quest to save her sister from an abusive marriage. The wit, banter, and genuine connection between the characters is what made me fall in love with this story. And, as always, I appreciate how Kingfisher can simultaneously evoke the familiar and be freshly inventive. This one was a lot of fun!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2025 - Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins</image:title>
<image:caption>Sunrise on the Reaping tapped straight into my nostalgia for the original Hunger Games books, capturing the same essence that had such a grip on me when I first read them (unlike the previous sequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which I appreciated for its worldbuilding but not for its narrative). What surprised me about Sunrise on the Reaping was how powerful the story was, even though we know how it ends for Haymitch. It could have been relentlessly bleak, but instead the novel leaves a quiet ache and a seed of hope from knowing how the larger story eventually unfolds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This picture book is packed with humour, thanks to great writing and fun illustrations. It brought me much joy to hear my fish-obsessed son reading this to himself at bedtime and laughing out loud. It may have also sparked a bit of a new obsession with crabs (don’t trust fish!).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2024 - The Wild Robot by Peter Brown</image:title>
<image:caption>The Wild Robot tells the tale of Roz, a helper robot who unexpectedly awakens on a remote island. My son enjoyed the stories of nature and survival as Roz slowly befriends the animals and raises her son, a gosling called Brightbill. Roz learns how to survive on the island and be wild, and she also learns how to be a mother. This book brought tears to my eyes. Brown does not shy away from the darker sides of nature (e.g. animals eating other animals, the impact of weather changes and climate) but handles all these subjects with care and sensitivity. The pacing varies throughout, with some parts feeling a little slow but still true to the experience of the seasons and changes on the island as time passes. The final act was full of action and excitement and led to many nights of my son demanding ‘one more chapter’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2024 - The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate</image:title>
<image:caption>Ivan is a mighty silverback gorilla who lives in a small domain in a shopping mall, along with other animals, such as Stella the elephant, and Bob, a stray dog who sneaks in to sleep on Ivan’s belly at night. When Ruby, a new baby elephant, is brought in, Ivan begins to reflect on his past and what it means for them all to be in captivity. He makes a plan to get Ruby to a better home. Applegate superbly writes from the point of view of Ivan the gorilla, with short chapters and sentences capturing his poignant thoughts and reflections. You can’t help but love him! The story was a little sad in parts, with my son needing some support and reassurance, but he loved all the animals and their connections with each other. A truly beautiful book!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2024 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The Saint of Steel series by T. Kingfisher You can’t really go wrong with anything by T. Kingfisher, but this series was one I found myself recommending to friends time and time again. Romantasy is a big trend these days, but The Saint of Steel series is a refreshing breeze in what is often a predictable, trope-heavy genre. The characters in this series are unique and endearing (and older than the average romantasy being in their 30s rather than late teens). Each book is connected but follows a different set of protagonists, one of which is always from the group of paladins whose god has died. This means each book has a satisfying conclusion to its romantic arc while also adding to the overarching plot and ongoing mysteries. The mystery plots propel the story forward and the worldbuilding is detailed, evoking a strong sense of place and history. I devoured the four books currently in the series and cannot wait for the next!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books 2024 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>System Collapse by Martha Wells When the first Murderbot Diaries book, All Systems Red, came out in 2017, I recommended it to all my friends. Murderbot follows a security bot that has hacked its governor module and taken control of itself. This latest novella is the seventh in the series and just as riveting and funny as book one. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed Murderbot’s narration. Murderbot’s observations and thoughts are so humourous, making me audibly laugh at times. Similar to The One and Only Ivan, I am in awe when a writer can capture a non-human point of view in a way that is so empathetic and unique. System Collapse is well-paced, exciting, and brings back many loved characters from previous books. Murderbot is one of my all-time favourite fictional characters, and I will happily read anything in this series.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2023 - Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross</image:title>
<image:caption>I adored this book! Divine Rivals is a romance story at its core, with fantasy elements blended in to create an intriguing world for the relationship to unfold in. Ross artfully plays with the enemies-to-lovers trope, hitting all the right notes while staying true to the characters and world. The book also beautifully touches on the feelings and impact of grief in an authentic way (not just a plot device, which is all too often the case). The story begins with Iris, a journalist, writing letters to her missing brother. When she slips them under the wardrobe door, they vanish, only to magically appear before rival journalist Roman. This book was the perfect blend of romance and fantasy, with characters and a world I cannot wait to dive back into with the sequel, Ruthless Vows.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2023 - Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree</image:title>
<image:caption>This BookTok recommendation was exactly as advertised: a delightful, cozy fantasy. Set in a world highly influenced by Dungeons & Dragons, the story follows Viv, a battle-weary orc who decides to open a coffee shop. I normally prefer more traditional fantasy, with epic quests and battles, but this quiet story still grabbed me with its interesting characters and atmosphere. There is enough plot to add a bit of intrigue, but the main joy comes from Viv and the wholesome relationships she creates with the other characters in the town. This was a cute and quick read that continues to make me smile whenever I think about it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - Ghost Bird by Lisa Fuller</image:title>
<image:caption>Lisa Fuller writes in such a vivid and visceral way that transports you to the setting of a small rural town in Queensland. An intriguing mystery unfolds as Stacey searches for her missing twin sister, Laney. This book is spooky, atmospheric, and compelling, and makes you question everything. Fuller writes with authenticity, bringing so much depth to this story. I read this amazing book after a friend recommended it to me and am so thankful. Ghost Bird is so much more than what my few sentences here can capture, and I don’t want to give away any spoilers. I urge you to go and read it and experience it for yourselves. You won’t regret it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia</image:title>
<image:caption>Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing is so visceral and evocative that I felt it under my skin. In pure gothic fashion, Noemí goes to stay with her cousin in a large creepy mansion after receiving some strange letters from her. The house and people in it are not what they first seem, and Noemí is drawn into the madness of this place. The book sent shivers all over my body and made my stomach churn at times. I still can’t get some of the images out of my mind.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman</image:title>
<image:caption>Challenger Deep is a challenging book. The surreal swashbuckling adventure of Caden Bosch on a ship headed for the Marianas Trench is juxtaposed with the story of Caden Bosch, a high school student who starts to act strange. Soon the two stories mix and meld together. It takes a little bit of time to get used to the style and flow of Challenger Deep but it is well worth persevering with. The book can be frustrating and emotional at times, but this all reflects the experience of its protagonist and highlights the struggles of mental health. There were moments of realisation that stole the breath out of my lungs and made me really appreciate Neal Shusterman’s writing. Not quite the escapist read I was looking for but still one of the most impactful books I read this year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - The Renegades Trilogy by Marissa Meyer</image:title>
<image:caption>This series follows Nova and Adrian, two prodigies with superpowers who are on opposing sides. Marissa Meyer builds a rich world with a long history of people with powers, exploring the positive and negative impacts of this on society. The series explores themes and questions of good vs. evil, what is justice, and what makes someone a villain. Marissa Meyer balances the lighter moments (friends training together, characters flirting with each other) with heavier ideas (for example, how powers are born out of trauma). While there is a lot of introspection, there is also some great action. All three books in the series make for a compelling and exciting young adult adventure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - The King’s Lands by Robert Lee Henry</image:title>
<image:caption>I may be a bit biased as this series is written by my dad, edited by myself, and includes cover art by both my brother and sister. Nonetheless, this is truthfully one of the best fantasy series I have read recently. Book One, The High Woods Hunter, sees Coric join the King’s calling to fight an army of strange beasts sent by the Hand, which threaten the King’s land and all those who reside there. Book Two, The Unnatural Hand, has the King’s army (and others) travel to face the Hand and stop this threat once and for all. Reminiscent of classic fantasy such as Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, these books are filled with action and adventure. A perfect escapist read.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2021 - Call Me Maybe by Cara Bastone</image:title>
<image:caption>Listening to a book is a different sort of experience for me. It reminds me of being a child when my parents would read me to sleep. There is something comforting about it. Many of the books I consumed this year were audiobooks and, of them, Call Me Maybe stood out. This audiobook is a delightful romantic comedy. Call Me Maybe has been developed specifically for Audible and, as such, is a little different to your average audio version of a novel. Wonderfully narrated by Luci Christian and Neil Hellegers, the story follows Vera Hoffman on a very long phone call with website customer service representative, Cal Kantola. We listen to their conversation but also get enough moments of introspection and description to make it still feel like a book rather than a play. Call Me Maybe is funny, light, and charming. Cara Bastone has created characters that are flawed, yet very likable, and the romance unfolds with all the warm and fuzzy feelings you look for in a book like this.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Santa, Your Santa: A Christmas Self-Publishing Success - When I first spoke with Margaret, she was already thinking of self-publishing rather than going through traditional publishers: “Initially, we just wanted to make a book for our son. We thought maybe a friend or two might be interested in it, but we never cared about it being a big international success or getting it into bookstores. Self-publishing meant we could do it faster and on our own timeline.” Self-publishing gave Margaret and Roger the freedom to write and draw what they wanted, as well as providing a higher royalty rate and faster production turnaround than traditional publishing. However, self-publishing didn’t come without its challenges. As Margaret states, “We had to learn how to do everything ourselves. We had to watch a lot of Youtube videos about how to format and edit the illustrations, how to format the book layout, uploading, and dimensions for Amazon KDP. Then when our book did start to become more successful, learning how to market it properly through different social media and online ads. In hindsight, I wish we had had more faith in our book from the beginning and I had done more research into marketing and had a proper plan laid out, rather than trying to learn on the go.” Nonetheless, My Santa, Your Santa has sold over one thousand copies and reached the best-sellers list on Amazon, making it a Christmas self-publishing success. I had the pleasure of working as a structural and copyeditor for Margaret and Roger on this fantastic story. Many self-publishing authors might question whether or not to invest in an editor, but for Margaret, it was a must-have. As she states, “Having someone outside of our bubble to actually look over our book is what made it so professional and widely loved. You might think what you wrote was great and perfect but having someone like an editor to actually check your grammar, sentence structure, the flow of the book in general, and how it aligns with the illustrations is really important. It makes it a more cohesive book.”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Copyediting vs. Proofreading - What’s the difference between copyediting and proofreading?</image:title>
<image:caption>Copyediting and proofreading are the final levels of editing needed before your book manuscript, thesis, report, or writing project are ready for submission or publication. Before this point, you will have completed a structural edit to address any big picture issues relating to the overall structure and style of your writing. Now, your work is ready for the final polish. While copyediting and proofreading services can sometimes be combined, there is a difference between them. Understanding this when employing an editor will ensure you are getting the service you need.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Manuscript Assessments vs. Structural Reports - What’s the difference between a manuscript assessment and a structural report?</image:title>
<image:caption>In the world of publishing, there are many different levels of editing. Generally, a manuscript or book will go through at least three levels before publication: structural editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Today, I want to focus on structural editing or the ‘big picture’ editing. This level of editing looks at story, structure, and style. It focuses on elements such as plot, pacing, themes, characters, dialogue, narration, and setting. The editor will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript and provide clear, actionable feedback. At Rafaela Novelli Editing Services, the two main services we provide at this level are manuscript assessments and structural reports. There can be a lot of overlap between these services, so what is the difference?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2020 - The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas</image:title>
<image:caption>This book should be on everyone’s must-read list. Published in 2017, The Hate U Give explores ideas of systemic and overt racism, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and what it means to raise your voice in protest. It was an emotional read and one that stuck with me throughout the year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Favourite Books of 2020 - Tell Me Why: The Story of My Life and Music by Archie Roach</image:title>
<image:caption>Archie Roach’s memoir is best listened to as an audiobook. Roach’s music is woven through as he narrates the story of his life. This is an important book that brings insight into the experiences of the Stolen Generations and explores the idea of belonging in Australia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Set in a world impacted by a zombie virus, this fast-paced novel focuses on a group of bloggers following a political campaign. Published in 2010, Feed eerily reflects the events of 2020 (there are some great scenes about sanitisation and quarantining). This book was a lot of fun and surprisingly emotional.</image:caption>

<image:title>Testimonials - “Rafaela Novelli produced an excellent assessment of my 80,000 word manuscript The High Woods Hunter, a fantasy novel, which sparked revisions that balanced the narrative and lifted the work to a level suitable for submission to agents and publishers. Rafaela appreciates how close to an author’s heart their work is (often the cause of difficulty in recognising problems) and presents criticisms and suggestions in a very clear and caring manner with the improvement of the manuscript manifest. I have already submitted a follow-up work to her for her scrutiny and look forward to her contribution.”</image:title>

I have used her in the past to assist me with academic publications, such as formatting reference lists and constructing indexes for my ethnography Performing Place, Practicing Memories and for the volume Le Défi Indigène (republished in English as The Challenge of Indigenous Peoples). Rafaela’s keen eye for detail and conscientious commitment to excellence proved invaluable in the successful publication of these books. I also consulted Rafaela in relation to my work on Maggie Wilson’s memoir, published as A True Child of Papua New Guinea. I am looking forward to employing Rafaela again for the creative non-fiction book that I am planning to write after my retirement from academia.”</image:title>
